Grants & Fellowships

Sometimes it helps to just have a little financial boost to get a project over the finish line.  Whether you want to build a foundation for writing as a future career or just get a little extra help to get a project started, the resources are endless.  A few listed below are good places to start exploring your options.

If you're ready for a deep dive, a fellowship might be the thing to get you more deeply immersed in your writing life.

  • Writers in Paradise:  Offers a one week fellowship for new writers hoping to learn from successful authors.  

  • National Endowment for the Arts: Fellowships for poetry and prose on a two year cycle.

  • Creative Capital:  A combined financial award and career support in many creative endeavors.

  • Write Life's List:  21 Fellowships for Writers explained in detail

  • The Writer's Center: A comprehensive list of fellowships at nationally recognized universities and other centers

  • ​Awesome Foundation: Microgrants for many fields including writing that have a tangible effect on a community.

Resources for Non-White Writers

These grants and organizations support minority writers who may not have been offered the same opportunities as others.

  • Hurston/Wright Foundation:  an organization founded to discover, mentor, and honor Black writers through workshops, awards, and engagement opportunities.

  • Arts Administrator of Color Network (AAC):  An organization built to empower artists and arts administrators by providing tools and resources to advocate for equity, inclusion, access, and diversity in the arts.

  • Representation Matters Mentor Program:  Potential future publishers are selected to receive mentorship from an accomplished professional in the field in an effort to increase the diversity of current staff.

Resources for LGBTQ+ Writers

These lists and funds help support LGBTQ+ writers and the critical work they publish to further our society's understanding of gender issues.

  • The Publishing Triangle:  This association of LGBTQ people in publishing has an extensive list of awards and recognitions you can apply for throughout the year.

  • Lambda Literary Foundation:  This organization has supported LGBTQ+ writers and their works for 30 years through grants and promotion.

  • Roadmap Writers:  This organization hosts a LGBTQ+ grant with a June deadline.

  • Queer Art:  QueerArt.org offers mentorship in several area of art including literature.
