Writers as Readers
Everyone will tell you a key part of success as a writer is to be a good reader. But reading in a way that benefits your writing is a specific skill and finding the right books can be tricky. Below are a few resources I've found to help me expand my range so I can learn from others to improve my writing.
Learning to read as a writer is a useful skill. This set of videos explains the why and how of becoming an expert reader, learning applicable techniques for one's own writing.
This is where things could get messy. There are thousands of book review sites, channels, and podcasts out there. Personally I look for reviewers that cross genres and have broader representation of different kinds of readers but a well constructed Google search for reviewers in your preferred genre will give you a great place to start. In the meantime, this list has some great suggestions.
Find your next favorite author with the literature map. Part of the global network of discovery, this algorithm reads the behavior of searchers and links like authors from common searches. Just type your favorites and find dozens more you may love!
Remember you can always just peruse the shelves of your local bookstore or ask your public library if they do 'book bundles'. This can be an excellent way to get librarians' suggestions on other authors you might enjoy! Best of all, both methods are free!
